Lone Peak Overland builds premium, custom-crafted truck campers designed to thrive at the rugged edge of off-grid exploration. Because the campers are highly personalized mobile basecamps, the journey to ownership is rarely a matter of simply clicking "Add to cart." Instead, it is a thoughtful configuration process where the buyer balances truck compatibility, specialized power setups, and a diverse ecosystem of overlanding gear. To translate this rather complicated buying process to the digital screen, Lone Peak Overland integrated our interactive 3D configurator and CPQ system, or as they call it — Builder, and virtual showroom on their Shopify storefront.

The challenge: Removing the choice fatigue
Capturing the hands-on excitement of designing a custom camper in a digital space has proven to be difficult, especially with the previous selection tool Lone Peak had on their website. Customers were greeted by a sprawling list of uncollapsed components that forced continuous scrolling, massive wall of text and toggles, creating cognitive overload and causing choice fatigue. For Lone Peak's core community — affluent outdoor enthusiasts, many of whom are life-long seasoned adventurers – the digital experience certainly didn’t feel like planning a dream expedition.
Recognizing that digital friction is the ultimate killer of e-commerce conversions, we set out to rewrite the narrative. By shifting our perspective entirely to the customer's mindset, we reimagined the platform. We removed the visual noise and reshaped a complex engineering tool into a welcoming, highly visible, and intuitively guided Builder. We created a new, fresh approach that restores the premium feel of an elite physical dealership — holding the customer's hand through a step-by-step journey that builds both — the perfect camper and the confidence needed to place a deposit.
To retain premium buyers, the platform needed to start acting like a luxury digital showroom. The solution required a separation of concerns, dividing the screen into two functional zones:
The 3D interactive showroom
A 3D viewport dedicated to real-time visual feedback, allowing users to watch their vehicle update in real time during the configuration process

The guided control panel
A clean, high-visibility menu structure designed to eliminate guesswork and naturally progress the buyer down the sales funnel

"
For a high-consideration custom product, interest does not always translate into checkout intent. Buyers may need to explore, compare, ask questions, or return later. The configurator was designed to support these different levels of intent — from saving a build to placing a deposit.

Deep-dive: High-value features engineered for conversion
Gaining trust through financial transparency
Hidden costs and ambiguous timelines create distrust and erode customer relations. To anchor expectations and qualify prospective buyers early on, the redesigned interface shows three important operational and financial metrics at the very top of the control panel on initial load:
Starting base price
Establishes the entry-point cost for the core camper shell and provides a clear financial foundation before the user begins adding premium modifications
Required deposit amount
Outlines the exact financial commitment needed to secure a production slot and immediately transitions casual browsers into a serious purchasing mindset
Dynamic estimated delivery window
Integrates real-time manufacturing lead times directly into the interface and presents logistical data upfront to eliminate post-purchase anxiety, manage production timelines transparently, and introduce a natural sense of urgency

New user journey: paced, milestone-driven progression
To completely replace the extensive scrolling of the previous design, we reimagined the customization path as a curated, chapter-by-chapter journey. We introduced intuitive directional navigation that lets users move fluidly between distinct phases of the build.

By breaking the whole catalog into logical, bite-sized milestones, we changed the interactive flow with premium options. The interface introduces choices in a common-sense order — starting with foundational vehicle specifications before introducing complex technical setups, like auxiliary solar systems and specialized canopy lighting. Isolating the high-value upgrades into their own focused views allows customers to appreciate the value of each add-on, naturally growing their investment without experiencing cognitive fatigue.

Smart menu automation
To keep the user's attention focused on building their dream setup, we replaced the forms with dynamic accordion menus that anticipate the user's next move:
Inline compatibility mapping
Interrupted journeys are a major cause of abandoned carts. We built the truck configuration choices directly into the natural vertical cascade of the sidebar menu, instead of forcing users to navigate through pop-up windows to input their vehicle details.
Auto-advance logic
The system actively responds to user inputs. When the customer selects their vehicle model, it registers the data, closes that panel, and shows the first accessory menu. It removes manual clicking, keeps the interface clean and uncluttered, and maintains steady momentum down the purchasing path.
Maximizing conversion through new, high-impact features
Streamlined configuration structure
We introduced a structured approach to product configuration, including clearly defined “Base build” component bundles and standalone selection options such as roof color choices. The new elements guide users through the configuration process and ordering while still allowing full customization for a bespoke camper experience.
Dynamic pricing transparency with Shopify-native checkout flow
To keep the build process clear, the interface includes a persistent utility bar at the bottom of the screen. Upon adding premium options such as heavy-duty gear racks, integrated solar packages, or specialized windows, the total price updates instantly. Real-time feedback prevents unexpected cost increases at the end of the journey and keeps buyers invested and in control of their choices.

Once the customer completes the build and clicks the final call-to-action, the system handles the transition in the background. The application packages the full 3D configuration data and sends it directly into Shopify’s native checkout. Direct integration removes the need for external systems and ensures the initial production deposit is processed quickly, within a familiar checkout flow, and with full security.
"
The 3D experience was essential, but it was only one layer. The real goal was to turn buyer choices into structured product, pricing, SKU, and Shopify data that could support the sales process.

Solidifying buyer confidence through the final manifest
Large financial commitments naturally trigger a moment of hesitation right before checkout. To counter this, the closing phase of the journey features a locked, read-only recap screen that serves as a definitive digital receipt before any payment occurs.
The view presents a line-by-line breakdown of the entire configuration. We paired the itemized list of premium accessories directly with vital logistics — such as the customer's selected regional dealer pickup and professional installation hubs — to eliminate any lingering ambiguity.
Results: Scaling success in high-ticket e-commerce
The transformation of the Lone Peak configuration platform proves a vital point in current digital commerce: when selling a complex, high-value product, user experience is your sales engine. Replacing a chaotic, text-heavy catalog with a structured, accessible digital showroom achieves far more than a simple visual update. It successfully bridges the gap between 3D technology and human-centric design, and creates a frictionless pathway tailored directly to the habits and expectations of their core demographic.
For Lone Peak's community of dedicated adventurers, the new Builder provides highly visible touchpoints and an intuitive pace that mirrors the elite craftsmanship and premium quality of the physical campers themselves.
New Buider respects the buyer's time, eliminates cognitive fatigue, and builds unwavering trust from the initial page load to the final click of the checkout button.
